MILLVILLE - The Millville Housing Authority had to supply space heaters in the middle of the night to eight senior citizens when a boiler malfunctioned at the Ferguson Court complex late Monday night.
MHA Director of maintenance Carl Terry said a boiler stopped working around 11:30 p.m. Monday. Eight of the senior housing complex's 50 units were affected by the malfunction, he said.
Sherry Kauffmann, the complex's property manager, said she responded to the facility at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday and spent an hour talking to the affected residents and delivering space heaters. The authority anticipates the boiler will be repaired by Wednesday and Kauffmann offered the eight residents the option to spend Tuesday night in a hotel room.
Two of the residents decided to stay in the hotel, Kauffmann said.
"The others said they were fine and it's warm enough," she said. "We were concerned, but everyone seemed to be OK."
Resident Dorothy Singleton commended the authority for how well the staff handled the situation and supplied the space heaters so quickly.
"They went above and beyond the call of duty," she said. "They're taking good care of me."
