MILLVILLE - The Holly City Family Center continues in its efforts to raise money, holding a weeklong open house starting on Monday and initiating a summer camp set to open this summer.

Less than a year ago, the fitness center's future had been far from certain, struggling to stay open on a month to month basis.

A $60,000 grant from the Cumberland County Improvement Authority in July, which the family center still holds in reserve, managed to stabilize the facility's finances.

"We were on the road to closing then, but we're going steady now," HCFC Director of Operations Janet Reeves. "We're doing a lot more fundraising now, including a breakfast event that recently raised $1,460 for us."

Next week's open house, from April 20-25, will offer free use of the center, and those that sign up for membership will be saved the $60 "joiner fee."

In addition, the HCFC is inaugurating a new weeklong summer camp for children in grades K-5. The camp will run for a total of four weeks.

Its membership holding steady at approximately 1,300 members, the HCFC was last week able to purchase $8,000 in new equipment, as well as hire a new massage therapist.

New additions to the family center include a 45-degree leg press/hack squat workout machine, a utility bench, 500 pounds in new free weights, a new weight rack and a new treadmill.

"We'll probably have to use some of that $60,000 for some of the new equipment," said Reeves. "As far as memberships go, we're lower than we were last year, but still better than it was in July, when we were about to close."

"Hopefully, we'll pick it up in April, when we usually get a jump in membership."

In addition to changes inside the HCFC, plans are in motion to renovate the lands surrounding the gym.

Officials at the Holly City Development Corporation are considering converting the empty lot between the HCFC and the former Church of God, on East Mulberry Street, into a park. According to HCDC official Paul Dice, the new park would include a walking track and field space.

The HCDC in Marhc gave "conceptual clearance" for officials, including Dice, who also serves as executive director of the Millville Housing Authority, to draw up plans for the park in addition to other grant projects.
