MILLVILLE -- The Millville Housing Authority is preparing to make capital improvements through federal stimulus money and internal savings.

MHA Executive Director Paul Dice said the authority will be able to do more preventative maintenance through recent increases in revenues and cost savings. The authority also received $720,675 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that President Barack Obama signed into law Feb. 17.

The authority's Board of Commissioners approved a request for a proposal for an architect to design plans for future work -- which includes the roof at Jaycee Plaza, plumbing at Riverview East and Riverview West and boiler upgrades at Ferguson Court.

Also:

  • At Tuesday's meeting, the board officially accepted the resignation of fellow member Dale Finch, who was elected to the City Commission on May 12. The commission will appoint a replacement to the seven-member board, but has yet to develop a specific process, said City Administrator Lew Thompson. People interested in filling Finch's seat have already notified the city, he said.

  • Dice also has instituted a new policy that will enable MHA employees to take an extra day off every few weeks if they work longer hours the other days. Dice said he has enacted this program before at previous jobs, and it helps with morale and provides less need for employees to take sick days or time off for family reasons. Dice said he would end the program if it appeared to disrupt productivity.

  • The authority will open a small outdoor recreation facility next to the Holly City Family center on June 10, Dice said. The authority designed the project as an area for seniors to walk and for children's recreation activities. The MHA spent $3,640 to create a four-foot wide mulch walkway, install sod and create a grass play area on the 10-by-20-foot lot next to the center.
