MILLVILLE - Mayor Tim Shannon will on Tuesday ask two of his fellow city commissioners to aid him in filling the vacant seat on the Millville Housing Authority following Dale Finch's election to the city commission.

The MHA on Monday voted to formally accept Finch's resignation.

He had served on the authority for more than 20 years before his election to the Millville City Commission in May.

Shannon stated on Wednesday he will ask Finch and one other commissioner to help him in appointing one of the three candidates that have expressed interest in the position.

"I have absolutely been working on the appointment. I've been contacted by three people and I'm going to ask the help of some of the commissioners to make recommendations," said Shannon, adding he will approach the commission on the subject at its June 2 meeting.

"Finch will be one of the one I ask to give a recommendation, because he knows what is needed of someone sitting on the

The mayor declined to reveal the name of the other commissioner from whom he hopes to solicit advice, adding the commissioner in question does not yet know he is about the imminent request.

"I can't bring this to them before the public meeting because of Sunshine laws," he said.

Shannon also would not give the names of the three people up for consideration to the authority.

However, Shannon did say he plans to name Finch commissioner liaison to the MHA.

As per state law, all but one of the seven members of the MHA Board of Commissioners is appointed by the city mayor.

The remaining commissioner is hand-picked by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs - in Millville's case, MHA Commissioner Pam Kipers.

MHA Chairman Larry Miller described Finch as a champion of public housing, and said the entire board of commissioners was very happy to see him succeed in his election campaign.

"Dale served with us for decades," said Miller. "He brought a quality of insight to the board that I can only hope to achieve in the coming years.

"It's going to be very tough to find a replacement for him."

Miller added that he has spoken with Shannon regarding the vacant seat.

"We should be hearing about the potential candidates soon," he said.

MHA Executive Director Paul Dice echoed the chairman's kind words for Finch, stating the outgoing board member will "surely be missed."

Said Dice: "I have a lot of gratitude and admiration for the approximately 20 years he's served with us."

The June 2 city commission meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. as an agenda session, with the meeting beginning at 5 p.m.
